I bought this for my 92 year old father in law, after he tried mine that I purchased 7 years ago. He raves about it every day, he says he falls asleep faster, sleeps longer without waking up. He says it’s so comfortable. He called me yesterday saying he can’t thank me enough for setting him up with the mattress. He’s really happy with it . Thank you!!

Buying The Right Pillow For You

Picking out a new pillow can be daunting. These six steps will help determine what kind of pillow is best for you.

Step 1: Time for an upgrade?

The rule of thumb is to replace your pillow every one to two years. However, if you’re sleeping poorly, then it’s time for a change.

Step 2: Foam or coil?

Foam mattresses offer a unique feel that hugs and contours your body. We recommend foam for most sleepers. Coil mattresses offer a more traditional feel with great bounce. If you want a more traditional feel, are an extremely hot sleeper, or are a heavier sleeper (250 pounds or more), we recommend a coil mattress.

Step 3: What’s your budget?

A budget between $1,500 and $2,000 will cover most queen size mattress options in the online market. Don’t spend less than $500 unless you want a mattress that’s going to break down quickly and potentially be more toxic.

Step 4: Soft, medium, or firm?

We measure firmness on a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. Most sleepers will enjoy a medium-firm mattress in the 5 to 7 range, but you may want to adjust based on your sleep position.

Side sleepers may want a softer mattress in the 3 to 6 range out of 10. Back sleepers may want a medium soft mattress in the 4 to 7 range out of 10. Stomach sleepers may prefer a firmer mattress in the 5 to 7 range out of 10.

Step 5: How do you sleep?

Your sleep position, weight, and sleeping partner may impact which mattress is best for you. If you are a heavier sleeper (more than 250 pounds) or sleep as a couple, good edge support is essential in providing pressure relief and weight distribution. Additionally, couples or sleepers who get hot easily may want a mattress with temperature-regulating technology to keep them cool through the night.

Benefits of Buying Online

Greater Selection

There is a wider range of companies to choose from online, so there is a great pillow for nearly every sleeper.

No Sales Teams or Middlemen

You can find the perfect sleep accessories for you without the hassle of aggressive sales teams. Plus, with no middlemen, the lower price gets passed to you.

Risk-Free Trials with Money-Back Guarantees

Most companies offer generous trial periods, usually 100 nights or longer, with a 100% money-back guarantee if you don’t love your new pillow. So instead of standing in a store picking up every pillow, you get to try your pillow out in your own home and actually sleep on it.

FAQs

How much should I spend on a good pillow?

While this is going to depend on your individual budget, there are lots of different high-quality pillows out there with lots of different prices. A high quality pillow can range from $80 to $200+. We think the Saatva Latex is a great option for a luxury pillow under $200, and if you’re on a tighter budget you can look at Layla and Brooklinen for a good value and high quality pillow.

When is the best time to buy a pillow?

Many bedding brands launch huge sales around federal holidays, so keep an eye out for deals around President’s Day, Memorial Day, and even Labor Day! You’ll also naturally find a ton of deals around Black Friday. Check out our sleep coupons and promo codes page year-round to stay up to date on the latest discounts.

How long should I keep pillows?

In general, you should replace your old mattress every 1–2 years. However, the lifespan of your pillow largely depends on the materials used to make it! We suggest checking in with your pillows every six months to make sure they’re still supporting you properly.

Also, whenever you’re buying a new pillow, it’s important to take a look at its warranty, which can also give you a good idea of how long it should last.

What is the best pillow for neck pain?

The best pillow for neck pain is the one that promotes neutral spine alignment when you’re in your go-to sleeping position. Of course, this looks different for each position, but making sure that your head and neck are never craned out of alignment with your spine is the best way to alleviate neck pain. To find a pillow that can help with your specific neck pain, check out our roundup of the best pillows for neck pain.

What pillow filling is best?

Different fillings are going to result in different feelings. For example, down pillows like the Brooklinen Plush Down tend to be extremely soft. Memory foam pillows give you a good deal of contouring. And latex pillows like the Saatva Latex are usually responsive and cooling. It’s all about identifying your personal preferences, then making an informed purchase.

For a more expansive selection, you can always check out our roundup of the best soft pillows and best firm pillows.

What is the most comfortable pillow?

It’s going to depend on your sleeping position. Check out our best pillow roundups to see our breakdown of what type of pillow might appeal to back sleepers, side sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combination sleepers. You should also consider what kind of feel you’re looking for — soft, firm, responsive, etc. From there, you can make an educated decision and ensure you’re getting the best possible sleep.
